Elections are likely to trim number of women in Congress - USATODAY.com:
Independent analysts predict that the number of women in Congress (currently 56 Democrats and 17 Republicans in the House, and 13 Democrats and four Republicans in the Senate) will decline for the first time in three decades.
The psycho/sociological implications of this are quite interesting, if not strangely opposite to the general actions of society.
This quote in particular struck me as very odd:
"It's always been tougher for women to get elected in a tough economy because voters tend to think women aren't as good on the economy," [Debbie Walsh] says. "They don't want to take risks in a bad economy, and they perceive women as being riskier.
I work in the finance vertical, tax preparation to be specific, and from what I see every year, this is absolutely backwards. Women tend to run the household finances, unless all the demographics are completely wrong. Given that women make up a larger portion of the population and tend to be in control of the family pocketbook, why would they be seen as "riskier" candidates than some guy who has most likely spent his adult life letting a woman take care of everything while he's busy building his career in politics.
