Negro League All Star Art Pennington's Home Destroyed by Iowa Floods
Friday, June 27, 2008 at 11:19AM
This morning CNN.com ran a story about a former Negro League All-Star named Art Pennington. "Superman", as he was known during his playing days, lives in my hometown of Cedar Rapids, IA (which I was wholly unaware of until reading this article. Art, who is 85 years old, lost everything in the house where he raised his children, including a small "museum" of priceless artifacts from his life in the Negro leagues.
This man, who played against all the greats (Jackie Robinson, Satchel Paige, Josh Gibson, etc...) and was kept out of Major League Baseball for his entire career had his life swept away by the rising waters of the Cedar River, but more than that, as a nation we lost a treasure trove of priceless artifacts from our collective history. Mr. Pennington may be just one among thousands that lost pieces of their lives to the recent flooding, but his loss is a loss for all of us, as many of the artifacts contained in his home are now at the bottom of the only recently receded Cedar River.
Mr. Pennington needs help to put his life back together (which at 85 is going to be hard enough without the loss of the story of his life). Please visit his MySpace blog and donate anything you can to help one of the greatest living American baseball players rebuild. Additionally, if you have a minute, swing by digg and help this get to the front page.

I’m so sorry to hear this news. I hope many people will help him. It’s been several weeks since the Philadelphia Phillies were crowned World Series Champions 2008. Although the Major League Baseball season is over, it doesn’t mean that the baseball action is at an end. Fans of the national game have turned their hearts and minds towards baseball’s free agency period – the “Hot Stove League.” Previously players could be bought, sold, traded or released as management saw fit, without consideration of the player’s family or their livelihood in general. Players fought for years to obtain the rights to ply their trade for the teams they preferred. Similarly, every consumer has the right to seek personal loans where and whenever you want, regardless of what anyone tells you. Personal loan companies should compete for your business as teams compete for the services of players. Low rates would be maintained with more favorable terms in this case.
